How To Enlarge A Sewing Pattern Size

DSCN1558

Practice you lot honey a design, but it doesn't come in your size?

This happens to me nigh 90% of the time, then I figured out a mode effectually it and I'1000 happy to share it with y'all!

Disclaimer:  I am not an skillful pattern drafter.  Take caution when grading up a blueprint.

  • This method works only with multi-size patterns
  • This is straight upwards grading from the average sizing of the blueprint, not plus-size grading
  • This method may not work for everyone, simply I utilise information technology to grade up nearly every blueprint that I use and I am successful

Starting Out

First off,if this your first time grading up a pattern, I recommend using a pattern visitor with sizing that you are familiar with.  Some patterns have a lot of ease, so your finished product may stop up larger (or sometimes smaller) than yous wish.  Pay attending to the finished garment sizes on the envelope.

2nd, I did non trace these patterns onto tracing paper.  If this is your first time grading, I recommend tracing your patterns outset then grading upward.  I rarely trace patterns unless they are vintage.  I don't have to do many alterations to patterns similar FBA's and honestly find tracing time consuming, peculiarly since I like to try out a lot of patterns.

tools

These are the tools that I use when grading patterns:

  • Rulers
  • Pencil/Pen
  • Chalk
  • Fabric Mark
  • Pattern Curve Ruler
  • Scissors

I like to employ both clear and solid rulers.  You could become away without using a bend, only it will make your life easier if you have one.  I am also using paper cut scissors for this, not my material shears (although these are one-time shears…).  The chalk and fabric marker are for grading on fabric (which I practise not recommend if you're a beginner).

The Patterns I'm Using

These are both beginner patterns from companies I am familiar with and fairly easy to grade upward.  The Belcarra is a pdf version which y'all could grade up without tracing for almost of the pattern pieces.

Notice Your Size

I start off past looking at the measurements on the size chart and sizing upwards co-ordinate to the patterns' sizes.  I then figure out my size based on the measurements. Sometimes I am mid-way between sizes and will grade betwixt the two upgraded sizes.

Pace One

step 1 measure 2

step 1 measure

Using your ruler, measure the increments between sizes.  With the Hazel, you lot'll notice that the increments between the upper sizes are larger than the smaller ones. This is non so with the Belcarra.  This is where making a muslin of your graded upwardly blueprint will come in handy.

Pace Ii

step 2 mark 2

step 2 mark

Now, take your ruler and measure out how far yous need to get out from the design sizes and mark it.  With the bodice on the Hazel, I am merely grading up one size, so I marked one increment.  For the Belcarra, I am going upwards 3 one/ii sizes, so I multiply my measurement from Step 1 times 3.five and use that measurement when grading up.  I find the easiest mode to do this is by setting ruler on the pattern lines and drawing a line out to your selected measurement, going up every 1/two – 1 inch or and so all the way around the pattern piece, line-fishing my ruler as I continue to follow the pattern lines.  When you are between the pattern sizes, you lot can measure in increments to fit your size at different points on the pattern and slope your ruler to fit these.  This can be a bit catchy and will take a chip of practice.

Step Three

step 3 connect

step 3 connect 2

I then take my ruler and connect the marks that I've fabricated.  Every bit you can see on the Hazel, it gets a little messy using a pen on the pattern paper and I should have used a pencil!

Footstep Four

step 4 curve

step 4 curve 2

step 4 curve 3

Patently, your body is not all direct rectangles and squares, so this is where your curve comes in.  You use information technology to draw your curves, and oh, how information technology makes life easier!! Of form, yous could draw lines without the curve if you so wish.

Step Five

step 5 cut

step 5 finished

Afterward you're done grading your design, cut it out!  Make sure that you've besides graded up the darts and markings too, using the aforementioned method of increments.  Equally we are doing a direct up grading from the average size, you lot may not fit the new dart placement, so make certain that yous make a muslin first, then that you can cheque the placements and get the fit you want.

Step Vi

step 6 finished pieces

step 6 finished pieces 2

Y'all're washed and ready to roll!!  Time to cut out your material and sew information technology up!

If your grading  is off past a hair, don't stress about it.  You tin usually fix that when y'all're sewing.  Sometimes my edges are non perfect and when I stitch it upwardly and cease the seams, information technology all magically disappears. :)

The about important matter to remember is to take your time.  Information technology might seem like a daunting job when y'all're starting out, but y'all'll go the hang of information technology and information technology will exist easy and second nature to you from then on.

I don't have whatever experience in grading down patterns, but I would imagine that you lot would become the opposite direction from the smallest size if you were using this method.

Alternate Method

alternate eyeballing method

I rarely have the time these days to draw out all of the increments on my design pieces as I accept graded upward many patterns now (not sure of the exact number– only I'd say it'south around 50+ at the moment).  I am pretty good at eyeballing things and I frequently grade up my pattern directly on my textile.  I mensurate out the increments and marking with chalk where I'g going to cut.  The above photograph is me doing this on the Hazel skirt and you can run across my chalk marks where I'one thousand going to cut.  Take caution when going this route.  It took a lot of do for me to get to that point.  If y'all want to try information technology this way, I recommend doing information technology first on your muslin.  BTW, white muslin works keen for making markings and grading up patterns!  But a flake unruly compared to tracing paper.

Whew! Yous're Done!
