how to become thane of riften

The Elder Scrolls prides itself on letting players choose what to do. Few RPGs grant the level of freedom thatSkyrim andThe Elder Scrolls series provides. From trading with vendors to becoming Thane in a region, the game lets players do practically anything.

Those who wish to become a Thane of a major city must do various tasks before bestowing the title. Most holds require you to help three citizens, but Riften is not a normal hold. Riften requires you to help 5 citizens and complete a questline, making it one of the longest quests to become a Thane in the game. It is well worth it, though, granting powerful items and a companion. Here is a step-by-step guide on how to become Thane of Riften inSkyrim.

8 Help Wujeeta

To become a Thane of Riften, you'll need to start by talking to a Skooma addict. She will ask for a healing potion. Give her one to start the main questline.

You can find Wujeeta in the Riften docks. She's an Argonian that needs a health potion to help kick her Skooma addiction. She is involved with a series of Skooma-related quests you will have to finish later. Once the potion has been given, the "I Done Got Thaned!" quest should start.

7 Help Shadr

Unlike most Thane questlines, you will have to help 5 citizens that roam the city instead of the normal 3. Luckily, there are a large variety of citizens to help.

Shadr is one of the easiest citizens to help, only needing you to talk to Sapphire. She is a member of the elusive Thieves Guild that needs to collect a debt from Shadr. If you can convince her to back off or pay off the debt, Shadr will be in your debt and help contribute to your Thane quest progress.

6 Brawl Hofgrir Horse-Crusher

Hofgrir is a tough Nord that resides in the Riften Stables. Like most Nords, he believes that testing your muscles is the only way to live.

Bet against Hofgrir that you can beat him in a brawl to get easy progression on your Thane quest. You need to bet 100 gold and beat him in the brawl, which will only allow unarmed combat. As long as you are wearing armor or have a large health pool, this brawl will be a cakewalk. Once finished, talk to Hofgrir to receive your gold and the ability to take any of his horses or items in the stable for free.

5 Help Balimund

Balimund works at a forge in Riften, providing the player with an assortment of weapons and armor. His forge is dying, however, and requires Fire Salts to fuel.

Ten Fire Salts are needed for Balimund to continue running his forge. Fire Salts are an uncommon item you can find in dungeons and as rare loot from Flame Atronachs. To make this quest easier, you can find two Fire Salts at the Grave Concoctions in Falkreath, and you can also buy an Alchemy station for your home to receive a few Fire Salts. You'll need to purchase the house later to finish the quest, so you might as well invest in it to make Balimund's quest go by faster. If you still can't find more, go to the College of Winterhold and purchase or steal their supply of Fire Salts. They have at least 5 Fire Salts in vendors and the environment at a time.

4 Complete The Unfathomable Depths Quest

An Argonian at the Riften docks has a quest players can accept to progress their Thane quest. From-Deepest-Fathoms wants you to return a Lexicon he found to the Dwemer ruin it came from.

Accept the quest to retrieve the Lexicon. From there, head to the Avanchnzel dungeon to return the item. It can be found at the northeast corner of the Greybeard's mountain. Standard Dwemer machines will try to kill you, but there are spirits you can see of Deepest-Fathoms and his companions. Return the Lexicon to where From-Deepest-Fathoms took it and return to him for a reward. If you refuse his quest and wait a week, he can be found dead in the Hall of the Dead in Riften, voiding his progression towards your rise to becoming Thane.

3 Complete The Dravin's Bow Quest

"Dravin's Bow" is a quest players can accept from Dravin, a Dark Elf in a nearby farm from Riften. He will ask you to retrieve his stolen bow from a group of thieves.

Unsurprisingly, the bow ended up in The Ratway Vaults. This location is located in the sewers under the town. You have to go here to find the Thieves Guild, but you do not need to be part of that guild to finish this quest. Simply kill the bandits that roam the sewers and take the bow from a nearby chest. Returning this bow to Dravin will reward you with gemstones and progression towards the "I Done Got Thaned!" questline.

2 Buy Honeyside

Honeyside is a house players can purchase in Riften for 8,000 gold. The house can be reduced in price to 5,000 like most other houses, but it is still quite an investment.

To become Thane of Riften, you must own this piece of property. It doesn't matter if you will use the house or not but you must buy it. The best way to earn money quickly inSkyrim is to either complete quests naturally or sell items to various vendors in the world. There is only one thing left to do once you purchase this house and help 5 citizens.

1 Finish The Skooma Questlines

Once you have Honeyside and helped citizens of Riften, you need to stop the disruptive Skooma operation that is happening in the city. This will require the completion of two quests.

"The Raid" is a simple quest where you talk to the Jarl of Riften about the Skooma problem. They'll ask you to enter the Riften warehouse and kill Sarthis Idren, a key player in the operation. Once complete, you will have to find a note that details the operation and report back to the Jarl. This starts the "Supply and Demand" quest, which asks players to enter Cragslane Cavern to kill the rest of the dealers. After this is finished, return to the Jarl to be promoted to Thane of the Rift.
